The Terraces of Purgatory - Mordor and the Ascent of Mount Doom
The Terraces of Purgatory
First Terrace: Pride. Carrying a heavy weight on the back. The wearer is unable to stand up straight. This teaches that pride puts weight on the soul and it is better to throw it off.
Second Terrace: Envy. Having one's eyes blinded, and wearing clothing that makes the soul indistinguishable from the ground.
Third Terrace: Wrath. Walking around in acrid smoke. Souls correct themselves by learning how wrath has blinded their vision, and impeded their judgment.
Fourth Terrace: Sloth. To continually run. Those who were slothful in life can only purge sloth by being zealous in their desire for penance.
Fifth Terrace: Avarice. Excessive concern for earthly goods - whether in the form of greed or extravagance. This is mended by lying face-down on the ground, unable to move. In other words one has become excessively earthy and has denied the spiritual.

Sixth Terrace: Gluttony. Food of the body does not feed the spirit. On this terrace the person fasts until his addiction is spent and he is free of it.
Seventh Terrace: Lust. Dante envisioned People burned in an immense wall of flames In order to be freed of this error. The fire is the passion, the lust, except that this is holy fire and thus healing.
I think the parallels between Dante's vision and Frodo's ascent of Mount Doom are obvious. That Frodo undertakes them while still living marks him as an initiate.
